n a world where we get our information from what seems like a bazillion sources, there is no shortage of podcasts as one of those sources. Last check there were 2 million global podcasts, with roughly 850,000 to 1 million based or produced in the United States. Needless to say, the U.S. is the largest podcast market, both in terms of content creation and listenership. Some start out hot then gradually fade away, but those who create a unique podcast with a subject matter for a wide audience can survive and become a lucrative business.
The most popular genre is true crime, with comedy, news, society and culture, business, and health and wellness following closely behind.Podcasts are one of the fastest-growing and most influential sources when it comes to a deep dive into entertainment, education, and niche topics, but when it comes to daily information, websites and online news are the most popular. So, where does that leave automotive-related podcasts? According to a few online searches, there are over 4,000 podcasts geared toward the automotive industry. With that said, they cover a broad spectrum of topics, including car reviews, industry news, maintenance tips, and discussions about automotive culture. Another company I worked for used to tell us how our readership “consumes” information. I thought that term was funny, as it’s likely the only things our readers consume are pizza, burgers, and some form of adult beverages. You gotta love it when the corporate suites come in and attempt to school us about the behaviors of our readership.
With so many podcasts available to choose from, it’s probably best that I keep it old school and stick with doing print, being that’s what I know best.
Post 2019, the landscape of automotive print magazines has undergone significant changes and as of late, has continued to do so, as the number of muscle car magazines and specifically those dedicated to classic Chevys went from a few down to zero. That’s where All Chevy Performance magazine stepped in to fill the void. Yes, there are a magazine or two out there that cover all GM brands, but when it comes to classic Chevrolet performance vehicles only, All Chevy Performance magazine is just about it.
At this point, diving into the podcast world doesn’t seem like the right move. I’m not ruling it out entirely—I’m always open to trying something new—but I’m also a realist. Let’s just say my face for radio pairs perfectly with my voice for print. I totally lack that deep baritone that tends to work well for audio purposes, so I’ll probably stay in my lane and focus only on the print side of the automotive media.
Should that day come when All Chevy Performance joins the highly congested world of podcasting, you’ll be the first to know. Just don’t hold your breath, something tells me that hearing from me once a month on this editorial page is probably more than enough.
So, for now, I’m all about keeping this magazine in line and online. Which reminds me, remember to check out allchevyperformance.com, it’s a pretty cool website where you can check out expanded event coverage along with additional images of the car features you see in the magazine. It’s a great place to visit when you’re waiting around for whatever you are waiting around for. I mean if you’re going to head down a rabbit hole, you might as well be lookin’ at some cool Chevy stuff.
You in?
